Instituto Xutyw · Guardians of the Earth

The future of humanity depends on the forests we protect today.

Indigenous peoples protect some of the most important ecosystems on the planet. At Instituto XUTYW, we restore forests, protect territories and strengthen Indigenous communities, because we believe that caring for nature is caring for the future of all humanity.

Reforestation

Every tree begins as a seedling.

More than 40,000 native seedlings have already been grown in our nurseries, through the work of 20 Indigenous women nursery growers.

The forest that feeds

Every tree is a source of life

In the Amazon, a tree is much more than wood, shade or stored carbon. It can be a true source of food for biodiversity.

Its fruits, seeds, flowers, nectar and leaves feed many species of birds, mammals, insects and other animals. At the same time, many of these animals help the forest keep existing: they carry seeds, spread fruits and help new trees to grow.

The forest feeds the animals. The animals help the forest grow back.

More than 116,000 trees planted.

By Indigenous hands, in our own territory.

A balance for the planet

Trees that store carbon.

As they grow, trees take carbon dioxide (CO₂) out of the air and store that carbon in their trunks, branches and roots.

  • 116,155seedlings plantedin the ground, in the territory
  • 18.9ktonnes of CO₂that these trees can remove from the air in their first 20 years
  • 18.9kcarbon creditspossible, since each credit equals 1 tonne of CO₂

Estimate: 116,155 seedlings × 163 kg of CO₂, the average per native tree in the first 20 years measured by ESALQ/USP (University of São Paulo) in restoration plantings. The real result depends on the species, the climate and how many seedlings survive. To become carbon credits, the planting must be measured and certified.

Who we are

An Indigenous organization caring for its own territory.

Instituto XUTYW was born in the Zutiwa village, in the Araribóia Indigenous Territory, home of the Tenetehar (Guajajara) and Awá-Guajá peoples, in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. We protect the forest and the waters, restore degraded areas and train fire brigades. We do this by bringing together traditional Indigenous knowledge and restoration work, with the participation of women, young people and communities.

Protecting the forest is protecting life.

Instituto XUTYW

The future of humanity is born in the forests we choose to protect.

Forests

  • regulate the climate,
  • produce water,
  • shelter unique biodiversity
  • and sustain life on the planet.

When a forest disappears,

the impact crosses borders and affects all of humanity.

Indigenous peoples are the guardians of some of the most important ecosystems on Earth.

For generations, they have protected territories, preserved ancestral knowledge and kept alive a relationship of respect between people and nature.

At Instituto XUTYW, we believe that restoring a forest is much more than planting trees.

  • It means restoring springs,
  • strengthening biodiversity,
  • protecting Indigenous territories,
  • preserving cultures
  • and building a safer future for the next generations.
  • Every seed planted is a commitment to life.

  • Every tree restored strengthens the balance of the planet.

  • Every territory protected helps secure a shared future for all.

Our mission begins in the Brazilian Amazon, but its impact belongs to the world.

Join us to restore forests, protect territories and grow a future where nature and humanity thrive together.

We believe that protecting the forest is protecting life.
